“Mamma said you’re a pretty girl what’s in your head it doesn’t matter. Brush your hair, fix your teeth what you wear is all that matters. Just another stage to pageant the pain away this time I’m going to take the crown without falling down down down!”
These are the lyrics from one of my favourite singers. The Queen B (Beyonce Knowles). I can relate to this song because yes I am a beautiful woman. But I am also smart. From a very tender age I have been entering competitions. The first writing competition I entered was a reading competition put on by the Jamaica Library serivice. Guess what I won! And I was the champion for Kingston and St. Andrew. I didn’t win the over all competition though 😦
The next writing competition I entered was a competition put on by Money Markets Limited. I came Third. While doing all of this I was actively dancing, signing and playing music and dancing around the world. Yes I am a nerd and proud of it.
I realised I was photogenic but I didn’t see myself as beautiful. In high school I entered this competition called the Miss 2222 pageant. During that pageant everyone was routing for my best friend at the time who is a very beautiful woman inside and out. The ideal browning long hair and ba bah boom hips. But no body in my year took the time to notice me. They made fun of me and my intersts. In the profile I was asked who I would like to meet most. My answer was Sydney Potier. I had put a soap opera as my favourite movie which I meant to put passion of the Christ. Zj Rush played at the event. The event coordinator was the head girl at the the time Shari <3.
Most of the girls in my school were like who the heck is Sydney Potier. By the way that actor made History he paved the ways for a lot of African- Americans and black people all over the world that is why I idolise him. One of my favourite movies is To Sir with Love.
Anyway back to the competition….
It turned out my best friend dropped out and I made it to top ten.
I did my talent piece. Playing the piano ofcourse and I made the top 5.
They were about to make the announcement of who won. WHEN T.O.K. (a Jamaican male dancehall group) came rushing into the auditorium! I felt as if I was on the set of girls gone wild!
Oestrogen was flying everywhere. T.O.K was singing and girls began to tear off the group members clothes. Flex’s gold watch included. Then they decided to leave. You think this would be the end.
HOLD UP WAIT A MINUTE LET ME PUT SOME DETAILS IN IT!
Girls ran from the auditiorium and ran after the car. One girl even triend to jump on top of the car and she succeeded! I don’t know how there weren’t any injuries.
I beleive I would have won that competition. But I guess we will never know.
I have always wanted to be a “beauty queen”. I have been trained. I went to workshops by Miss World 1993 the Hon. Lisa Hannah. I went to modelling classes by the great Althia Laing. So, I either wanted to Miss Jamaica Festival Queen or Miss Jamaica World. But alas!
Like every other woman I have issues with my body. I am naturally big boned. And FAT and Beauty Pageants don’t mesh.
Will I still enter Miss world or Miss Jamaica festival Queen? maybe
But if I do I would like to encourage young ladies like myself. That being “fat” is ok just as long as you are heatlhy. Being “skinny” is ok too! Just as long as your healthy. Love yourself as long as you are healthy. Do not pay attention to what the media or what haters say!
So WHAT IS PRETTY?
PRETTY IS WHATEVER YOU WANT IT TO BE. PRETTY IS BEING A GENUINE SOUL ON THE INSIDE AND LETTING YOUR BEAUTY SHINE FOR PEOPLE TO SEE ON THE OUTSIDE. BEAUTY IS STILL TRYING TO PUT AN ATTRACTIVE PICTURE ON THE OUTSIDE WHILE WHOLISTICALLY MAINTAING YOUR SPIRITUAL AND PHYSICAL SIDE. BEAUTY IS LIVING AND LOVING LIFE TO THE FULLEST! BEAUTY IS LOVING GOD AND RESEPCTING MAN AND ANIMALS! BEAUTY IS LOVING YOUR PARTNER AND YOUR CHILDREN AND REALISING LIFE IS NOT PERFECT.
IN CONCLUSION BEAUTY IS LIFE AND WHAT YOU MAKE IT!
